Institute for Public Health Innovation and Zee Turner Center

Established in 2009, the Institute for Public Health Innovation (IPHI) has been one of over 50 member public health institutes within the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI). Public health institutes work with public and private partners to strengthen public health and make systemic improvements. The focus is on community health (versus individual health), which helps all people access the conditions and resources needed to live healthy, happy lives.

IPHI is a unique non-profit resource that:

  • Strengthens health service systems and public policy.

  • Improves the environments and conditions where people live, work, learn, and play.

  • Builds organizational and community capacity.

IPHI is the official public health institute serving the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.

In 2013, IPHI established the Center for Community Health Workforce (CCHW) to enhance and support the growing needs of community health workers (CHWs). In 2023, the center was renamed the Zee Turner Center for Community Health Worker Workforce Development (Zee Turner Center) in memory of Zhilphia “Zee” Turner, one of IPHI’s dedicated CHWs who served for 15 years in Washington, DC.

Today, the Zee Turner Center is a regional center of excellence committed to advancing CHW practice, research, and policy. As an accredited CHW trainer in Maryland and Virginia, IPHI equips new and existing CHWs with the necessary knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
